I recently rode the east half depicted on the map from 7th Ave to Washington St and Center Pkwy at the east end.Most of the trail is paved. What isn't is hard pan gravel. After a year and a half on ESB works the Green Route has finally opened. The Grand Canalscape project will create a nearly 12-mile continuous trail system along the Grand Canal from 1-17 to the Phoenix/Tempe border and is part of a larger regional trail and crossing project, which will ultimately result in a continuous trail along the Grand Canal between Glendale and Tempe.The vision for the Canalscape project originated with Arizona Forward, a local organization. i have been tracking the amount of steps i get everyday and walking on this for a couple of miles, i reached todays goal.Grand Canal Trail is a 18.8 kilometer moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Phoenix, Arizona and is rated as moderate. I wouldn’t recommend going past 19th Avenue it turns into a lot of homeless and trash on the roads it didn’t feel safe. The two canals that connect Dublin with the Shannon, the Royal and the Grand, can be linked to create a 120km route with only 40km of road riding. The trail or canal at least extends all the way to New River where the canal ends. This is a walking or biking trail. You can connect to the New River Trail there. Most of the time the trail crosses major traffic arteries in inconvenient places. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Covering 8.5Km the new cycle path extends from the 12th Lock at Inchicore (Black Horse) to the 3rd Lock in Lucan. The Grand Canal Path is one of the longest multi-use trails in the Phoenix metropolitan area, linking the large cities of Glendale, Phoenix and Tempe. Most of the pix above are of somewhere else.We got on in Glendale and rode east about 10 miles and turned around, so we did not quite get to I-17.
According to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the Arizona Canal Trail is 35.9 miles long. From Bridge 1, the route stretches southwards from St. Catharines to Port Colborne, a distance of 45 km / 28 miles (including George Nicholson Trail). In the opposite direction you can go up to 24th Street and then it’s closed for construction. For most of the way, the trail follows alongside the Grand Canal through residential and business districts. Signage is lacking, which would be helpful to know when a busy street is coming up or. This part is paved and is good for running, walking, bike riding Grand Canal Trail is a 11.7 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Phoenix, Arizona and is rated as moderate. Cycling along the Welland Canal, you will see massive 26,000 ton ships up to 226 metres in length as they glide past grassy banks on their way to climb the Niagara Escarpment. it was a really fun time.
Easy enough to ride on. i enjoyed walking today from North central to 19th avenue which felt like a good walk. Crossing so many busy streets was the challenge and the main reason we will not do this trail again until more improvements are made. the canal trail is so beautiful!
Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.An awesome paved trail away from the smog of traffic in the middle of the city!

Overall a great trail!The map accurately reflects the east half of the Grand Canal. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and road biking.
