Lighting manufacturers use borosilicate glass in their lenses. In recent years, with the resurgence of lampworking as a technique to make handmade glass beads, borosilicate has become a popular material in many glass artists' studios.

Compared to other materials of construction that offer similar properties such as corrosion resistance, glass is relatively economical to produce.  When compared to the other options such as quartz, glass is an extremely affordable solution.

Another method of making unbreakable glass is a process called tempering. Borosilicate glass is a type of glass that contains boron trioxide which allows for a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. Tempered glass is glass that has been treated to make it stronger and safer; it is quite common and is found in many places, including safety glass windows and doors. This is because it has a low thermal expansion coefficient which means it is more resistant to changes in temperature. Tempering is also used to make your phone screen stronger and your car windows less likely to shatter. Cookware. The older version of "Pyrex" glass was made with thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass, rather than the tempered soda-lime glass now used by the new manufacturer. Environmental issues aside, tempered soda lime also stands up to sudden impact better than borosilicate glass, which Pyrex says is the most common type of damage consumers are faced with. “What are the diferences between borosilicate and pyrex glass?” Pyrex was traditionally made of boro-silicate glass, and was produced by a division of Corning called the Consumer Products Company. Borosilicate glass has an extremely low coefficient of linear expansion (3.3 x 10 –6 K –1 ) as a result of its low thermal expansion. Today, Wal-Mart is the largest distributor of Pryex products. This process creates a type of glass that is more resistant to thermal shock than ordinary glass.

While there are many different types of glass, and their properties vary with their chemical compositions, there are a few characteristics, most kinds of glass have in common.

It is used for Laboratory equipment, cookware and specialised products.Boron is a metalloid, or semi-metal, which means it has properties associated with metal and non-metal elements. Please see our specialised range: It’s clear to see why glass is a good solution when it comes to visibility (how could I resist this pun).  Compared to the array of plastics, metals and other materials of construction, glass provides a smooth surface that offers an unobstructed view of what is going on inside the equipment, enhancing the level of observation in any process.  There is a slight decrease in transparency with the addition of Sectrans coating, an optional covering to the glass surface added for its protective properties against scratches, blows and splintering.  Similar to the properties of glass-lined steel, glass equipment provides unsurpassed corrosion resistance  to water, neutral and acidic solutions, concentrated acids and acid mixtures, and to chlorine, bromine, iodine and organic substances. The tools used for making glass beads from borosilicate glass are the same as those used for making glass beads from soft glass.Borosilicate glass is offered in slightly different compositions under different trade names:Among the characteristic properties of this glass family are: This means it will not crack under extreme temperature changes like regular glass. It showed up with a massive disclaimer saying that the slide is made with Borosilicate glass and “it may break during normal use.” Naturally, it goes on to say that the manufacturer isn’t liable if it breaks and causes permanent injury. Why is Borosilicate Glass better than normal glass? This reduces material stresses caused by temperature gradients, which makes borosilicate a more suitable type of glass for certain applications (see below). Although it has improved heat resistance it can still break, particularly if exposed to sudden changes in temperature.

Borosilicate glass does not crack at high temperatures found in ovens.

Boron is a metalloid, or semi-metal, which means it has properties associated with metal and non-metal elements. It’s ideal, therefore, for casserole dishes. Normal glass is usually made from sand (or silica), Soda (sodium carbonate) and Calcium Oxide (lime). Plexiglas© is a popular brand name for acrylic.
