Judge Needles also manages the Travis County Supervision and Monitoring for Alcohol Related Treatment (SMART) Re-Entry Court, which is a specialized docket operating bi-monthly and dedicated to the assessment, treatment and supervision of the participants of the SMART program. Judge Needles has served as the presiding judge of the 427th District Court since January, 2017. As chairwoman, Judge Needles is currently working to develop a mental health diversion program, which would divert low level, non-violent offenders with mental health issues to a hospital diversion center in lieu of jail.
