African megaliths. Nabta Playa at the southwest corner of the western Egyptian desert was once a large lake in the Nubian Desert, located 500 miles south of modern-day Cairo. But megaliths clearly had and have multiple meanings and multiple uses over the thousands of years that they have stood. Building the sled itself can take several days, and typically males between the ages of 10-60 are assembled to pull the stone from the quarry to the tombsite. It contains more than a third of the total number of examples of megalithic art in all Europe, with over 200 decorated stones found during excavations. Typically, though, megalithic monument refers to monumental architecture built between about 6,000 and 4,000 years ago in Europe, during the Neolithic and Bronze ages.
