Krathong is decorated with folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. Loy Krathong festival, ’loy’ means to float, while ’krathong’ is a small container, traditionally made from a piece of banana-tree trunk, containing a candle, incense and flowers. Burning incense and lighted candles cover the tops of the krathongs, which are the circular objects, usually made of banana leaves and flowers, floating down the river. The festival is usually right at the end of the rainy season and sometime in the month of November. On this occasion we, 1) offer thanks to the Goddess of the river which is our source of life, 2) ask for forgiveness from the Goddess of the river for having used and made the rivers dirty, 3) offer flowers, candles and incense sticks as a tribute to the Holy Footprint of the Buddha, 4) to wash away the previous year’s misfortunes, and 5) to wish for a happy and healthy new year. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three incense sticks, some flowers and coins.
