The Nikola TRE currently in development is based on the new IVECO S-WAY platform and integrates Nikola’s truck technology, controls and infotainment.

The system can even adjustsettings such as ride height and climate temperature to driver preference. The partners are taking a long-term approach, bringing bothtechnologies on stream now to pursue BEV and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)in their offering in the next few years.Would you like to stay up to date with The Truck Expert?© 2019 – Immediate Network Limited.

The first e-trucks to go into production from 2021 are the battery-electric 4×2 and 6×2 vehicles. According to Nikola Motors, the battery-electric model is “the first step on the way to the electric fuel cell model”.

The Nikola TRE is first vehicle resulting from the joint venture between CNH Industrial and Nikola.

Nikola will present the heavy-duty electric truck based on the Iveco S-Way truck at the IAA 2020 in Hannover. It is based on the Iveco S-Way truck, which was launched in July. Iveco, FPT Industrial and Nikola unveiled the maquette of the Nikola TRE, a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with a range of up to 400km.

This also enables a smart keyless entry system tounlock as the driver approaches the vehicle. Delivery of the first Nikola Tre units to customers is planned for 2021. The heavy-duty truck partnership saw CNH Industrial taking a $250 million stake in Nikola as the lead Series D investor. However, the draft is still being coordinated by the various departments and has not yet been decided.“The decision to build the Nikola TRE in Ulm – a centre of heavy-duty truck engineering excellence – underscores the site’s strategic location at the heart of Germany’s fuel cell technology cluster,” says Hubertus Mühlhäuser, CEO of CNH Industrial. Nikolasaid the fuel cell will be the starting point for the design of the electricbattery, so that the Nikola TRE BEV can be converted to fuel-cell technology. The Nikola TRE will also be available in 2- and 3-axle rigid versions, with GVW ranging from 18 to 26 tonnes for urban distribution and municipality missions.Gerrit Marx, Iveco’s president commercial and specialty vehicles, said that the Iveco S-Way is: “the bones of the Nikola TRE and marks the beginning of a new journey towards zero-emissions trucking, providing the platform for us to introduce disruptive features that will change the transport industry.”In addition, the Nikola TRE will feature a new infotainmentsystem based on Nikola’s proprietary operating system that integratesinfotainment and navigation functions, as well as controls for the bulk of thevehicle’s functionalities.

The TRE is based on the new to market IVECO S-Way and carries forward many of the same design queues, but with Nikola badging. In addition to the local funding project in Ulm, Nikola Tre will be benefitting from the federal government’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which provides for funding of two billion euros to finance a hydrogen innovation programme and to build up the necessary infrastructure. “The IVECO S-WAY is a stand-out product, which embodies IVECO…
