I nside No 9 continues to go from strength to strength and, when I sat down to watch what was pitched as the story of a haunted flat, I had no idea of the surprises that awaited me.

Not Inside No. But this meeting does not go as expected, and the visitor reveals some terrifying truths that could ultimately prove fatal…

She has written about TV, film and books for Den of Geek since 2010, and for…With all the Maureen and David action, there wasn’t much time to establish Coleman’s character as somebody unhinged enough to stab her partner and then sashay around cheerily while his body rots, but even that was set up in the mildest of ways with Sam’s “you are susceptible…” note of warning for her not to get obsessed with the flat’s history.

However, the only flat that they can afford has a dark past – it previously belonged to a serial killer, and Beattie is convinced that she can feel its presence within the walls.

A series of darkly comic sketches outlined the Sowerbutts’ peculiar dynamic, proof that Pemberton and Shearsmith’s talent for unsettling comedy is going nowhere.

‘Death Be Not Proud’ is Pemberton and Shearsmith at their finest, with a genuinely-impactful surprise leading to great writing with lots of comedic and dramatic beats. Even Maureen’s death scene was recreated, complete with a replay of the excellent John Donne/did gag.Louisa Mellor is the Den of Geek UK TV Editor. As the episode closes out, Beattie kills Sam too, who lies dead in the bathtub, and switches the radio on, telling the two ghosts (David and Maureen) she’ll be back soon where the episode ends. But what they can afford has a sinister past.

The characters clearly still fit like a glove, with Shearsmith’s sour, malevolent Maureen a scene-stealer every time.
