There’s no velocity sensitivity, but note on and note off information is sent out from the keyboard. A split of the data across MIDI channels 1, 2, and 3 is also performed based on the control panel switch settings. If you build this for a system other than the PAiA FatMan, you must design an appropriate attenuator or amplifier, whichever is necessary for your system or mixer.

fatman analog midi synth. Paia FatMan analog synthesizer kit by Paia Electronics. Sequence playing from Cubase. A demonstration of some of the sounds the PAiA Fatman synth can produce.

When I was a teenager, I built several of their products from plans in Radio Electronics magazine, and I made a keyboard using circuit boards from Paia and parts from places like Jameco and Digi-key.It included a couple Organtua boards and a Stringz ‘n Thingz chorus board. The circuit is based on a 4046 type micropower phase locked loop IC and uses a divide by 12 counter inserted in the loop to force the PLL's VCO to run at 12 times the input frequency. Although it was designed around a PAiA FatMan, it should be adaptable to almost any analog system. View and Download Paia FatMan user manual online. This circuit works well with a -12V pulse or square wave (pulsating DC, negative going) input. This circuit is a multi purpose phase locked loop designed for frequency multiplication (harmonic generation). PLL FREQUENCY MULTIPLIER MODULE By Scott R. GravenhorstOriginally designed for PAiA FatManMuch like a VCO (or in this case, 7 VCOs), this is a sound generating module, intended to enhance a synth by tracking a VCO to produce it's own waveform at 7 different harmonic frequencies. If you are building this for a system other than a FatMan, you may need some kind of conditioning for the 4046 input, such as a schmitt trigger or op amp or both. Direct into a M-Audio Fast-Track Ultra audio interface. This should be fairly simple, being not much more than a voltage divider (attenuator) or an Op Amp buffer. Here is a list of some harmonics and their interval relationship back to the fundamental: Below is a drawing to help visualize the layout of everything in the case.  There is a lot in this little case, really need a good roadmap to put it all together!  The colored circles on the schematic identify sources or destinations for all the connections. The 12V key switches that are used to key the voices are also sampled and used to trigger the MIDI processor to generate MIDI data.

It's output is provided as a set of 7 different square waves representing octaves and perfect 5th harmonics of the input signal. The circuit is based on a 4046 type micropower phase locked loop IC and uses a divide by 12 counter inserted in the loop to force the PLL's VCO to run at 12 times the input frequency. Although it was designed around a PAiA FatMan, it should be adaptable to almost any analog system. Although I housed mine in a custom built keyboard, it's a vanilla unmodified kit. I’ve always been a big fan of Paia gear. So even though the keyboard is small, it is zoned to allow simultaneous control of multiple MIDI devices.  The mixer schematic is a pretty basic design for the 4 sound sources.  The piano output from the Stringz ‘n Thingz gets its own noise gate instead of being mixed through the same one as the strings sound.  I was getting some hum interaction between the organ and string ranks, but a couple audio isolation transformers solved that problem.  Paia’s power supply design has a +/-12V supply sharing space on the chorus boards.  Since I have two chorus boards in my unit, I use one to power the strings and MIDI interface and the other to power the organs. Because it is a phase locked loop, it has characteristics of it's own, such as controllable lag and over/undershoot when the input frequency changes.2f 1 oct3f 5th + 1 oct4f 2 oct5f maj 3rd + 2 oct6f 5th + 2 oct7f min 7th + 2 oct8f 3 oct9f 9th + 3 oct19f minor 3rd + 3 oct27f 6th + 4 octThe circuit works for a FatMan as designed and drawn. Somewhere along the way, it got dismantled but I saved all the parts.
